Via Roma 10, 80045 Pompei, Italy

HABITA79 Hotel & Spa Pompeii casts a huge, imposing figure in the heart of present-day Pompeii, a half-hour train ride from gritty urban Naples and 50 minutes by train in the other direction from sunny Sorrento, laden with zingy lemon-based products overlooking the Bay of Naples. After you've wandered stupefied around the ghostly streets, temples, Roman baths, grand villas and amphitheatre (older than Rome's Colosseum) of the once-bustling, UNESCO-listed Pompeii that was dealt the fateful blow by Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE, you might want to continue the spine-tingling archaeological roaming: Herculaneum is another doomed town called Ercolano today and reached by train between Naples and Pompeii, and remains of ultra-elite Roman villas can be seen at Stabiae - take the train south to Via Nocera station and then walk for around 25 minutes.

Hop on a train into Naples to witness the coastal city's vast history on an underground walking tour, see its gilded Baroque chapel Capella Sansevero, check out ancient tombs and social structure in the San Gennaro Catacombs, and admire astonishing art in Italy's largest gallery, Museo di Capodimonte. Shopping, aperitivi and pizza are equally crucial here. You can take ferry rides over to Capri and Ischia from Naples or Sorrento for dreamy Italian island vibes and drive an hour across the Sorrento Peninsula to admire Italian towns cascading romantically down the hillsides on the sigh-worthy Amalfi Coast.
