Via Preli 15, 16043 Chiavari, Italy

In a delightful spot on the Italian Riviera, where the Entella River tumbles into the Gulf of Tigullio, Chiavari has a charming medieval heart. Typically narrow streets are lined with arcades holding galleries, shops, restaurants and bars painted in the romantic Riviera palette of pastels. Dip in and out of the many ancient churches and cathedrals with sigh-inducing interiors, wander past dramatic palazzi, toast yourself a gorgeous brown on the beach and clamber up to the top of the town for dreamy views over the Gulf of Tigullio and the Ligurian Sea behind.

Chiavari's train station lies a 15-minute walk from the hotel and can transport you along this sigh-inducing coast to pretty Sestri Levante in a quarter of an hour and then onto each of the five heavenly Cinque Terre villages - all rightly listed by UNESCO. In the other direction, Genoa beckons, with its romantic vibes and idyllic situation overlooking the Ligurian Sea. The capital of the coastal region of Liguria, this historic port city was named European Capital of Culture in 2004, and to this day it continues to give rivals Rome, Florence and Venice a good run for their money.
