Location and what's nearby

static map

Exford, Exmoor National Park, West Somerset TA24 7PY

The Dark Sky Reserve of Exmoor has some of the darkest skies in the UK – thanks to minimal light pollution, on a cloudless night, you can see thousands of stars and astronomical sights, like the Milky Way, with the naked eye. After you've rambled Exmoor National Park, head further afield for more regional beauty. Dunster Beach – around a 30-minute drive from Exford – offers an excellent viewing spot for the area's birds, which include waders sheltering from the Arctic conditions further north, curlew, dunlin and flocks of oyster catchers.

Behind Dunster Beach, you'll find a freshwater lake with kingfishers, water rail and even tawny owls and buzzards. Nearby, you'll find the medieval town of Dunster itself, home to an imposing castle and peppered with tea shops. There are also many cosy pubs in the area with fireplaces to snuggle up by.
