Once you've finished exploring the surrounding Eastern Docklands area, take a scenic 30-minute walk or 10-minute bike ride into Amsterdam’s historic centre, where the city’s fairytale gabled façades, intricate canal network and 17th-century architecture await you. A haven for art lovers and history buffs, the city’s Museum Quarter is not to be missed - get up close and personal with the Dutch Masters at the Rijksmuseum, catch world-famous sunflowers and landscapes at the Van Gogh Museum, or switch things up with Mondrian, Chagall, and modern art icons at the Stedelijk Museum.

Elsewhere, the Rembrandthuis Museum, Royal Palace and quirky Our Lord in the Attic Museum are well worth a visit, while a photo-stop outside Amsterdam Centraal station is very much in order. The city’s notorious foodie and social scene offers plenty of scope to live it up like a local, while The Hague, Rotterdam, and the UNESCO-listed Kinderdijk windmills make for the perfect day-trip, should you wish to take the wheel.
