An elegant veranda peeps out over a manicured garden, while inside characterful oak floors are complemented by a country club vibe – the 16 bedrooms are all uniquely decorated, though soft neutrals, seagrass carpets and plantation shutters throughout nod to the building’s history.

  • Wining and dining: The hotel’s restaurant is popular with locals and guests alike. Locally sourced ingredients feature highly on menus which change with the seasons and there’s a varied wine list plus eight different gins to sample. Breakfasts will set you up for a day of exploring, including a continental buffet followed by hot made-to-order favourites like a veggie full English with halloumi, and the afternoon teas are particularly impressive.

The nearest National Trust property is a two-minute walk, and there are fantastic hikes and bike rides locally around the South Downs National Park. High St, Alfriston, Polegate BN26 5TD

Alfriston’s a beautiful corner of the South East – one of those postcard-perfect villages with a thriving High Street lined with half-timbered pubs, little independent boutiques and a chocolate-box church. National Trust properties abound, such as the charming Alfriston Clergy House, and there are country walks aplenty just moments from the High Street, including the South Downs Way and the Seven Sisters Cliff Walk.

Beaches are easily accessible too: Cuckmere Haven’s dramatic cliffs and swathe of polished pebbles is just a 15-minute drive. Glyndebourne, vineyards, kiss-me-quick beach resorts and good pubs are all within reach.
