Cosy Hampshire inn with a fabulous restaurant

The Ropemaker Hotel, Emsworth, Hampshire

Property details

Soak up the sea breezes from a characterful pub with rooms and a great restaurant, moments from the sea – includes breakfast and a welcome drink.
  • Coastal cool: Cosy yet contemporary is the décor of choice at The Ropemaker, where rooms are outfitted in colourful print block florals, pretty paintings and chic furniture – it feels like staying at the home of your most stylish best friend, with lots of thoughtful details like Roberts radios (perhaps for checking the shipping forecast?) and cosy throws to snuggle up in. Many of the rooms are suitable for dogs too, so you can bring your furry friend along for the adventure.

  • Posh pub grub: Menus are seasonal and feature all the fresh, vibrant flavours of the region, from grilled chalkstream trout to roasted pheasant, fabulously indulgent souffles with oak-smoked cheddar and prime steaks from a local butcher. The Sunday lunch is particularly recommended, which comes with bottomless Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and gravy. The abundant cheeseboard is the perfect way to round off your meal.

  • Charming Emsworth: The Ropemaker’s setting in Emsworth is a great jumping off point for coastal adventures, whether you’re out on the water or just roaming the shores. Hire (or bring) bikes to pedal along the coastal paths, spotting the plentiful wildlife. Shopaholics will love Gunwharf Keys for snapping up premium labels, and if the weather’s good you can spend the day at one of the beaches soaking up the sun.

How to get there

Regular services run from London's Victoria and Waterloo stations to Hayling Island, stopping at Havant, which is the nearest mainline railway station. There’s a station at Emsworth too, and you can walk from there to The Ropemaker in about 20 minutes or take a taxi to shorten the journey to five minutes.

Havant is also serviced from Gatwick, Portsmouth, Southampton and Brighton. By road, Emsworth is accessible from the A3(M) and M27.

Charming Emsworth sits just east of Havant and just north of Hayling Island on the South Coast - it's a superb base for discovering the New Forest, Isle of Wight, and historic cities of Portsmouth and Chichester, and is also minutes from Hayling Island’s two European Blue Flag-award beaches. There are fantastic coastal walks beginning in Emsworth and leading to great spots for a picnic and a photo souvenir, and plenty of attractions for families such as pleasure boating or building sandcastles.
