The City of Dreaming Spires is as enchanting and interesting as cities come. Even the old streets – teeming with life, ancient buildings and brainiacs – are as much of a site as many of the actual tourist spots. On weekends many of the university’s colleges are open to the public, and these impressively pretty buildings are certainly worth a mosey around – Magdalen and Christ Church are particularly stunning, and Christ Church has the added benefit of its large meadows, which make for a lovely country walk. And then there are the areas of interest, like the Ashmolean Museum and the Bodleian Library, both of which have frequent internationally renowned exhibitions. On a sunny day don’t pass up the chance of going punting on the river – you can hire a punt down by Magdalen Bridge and get taken out by a seasoned punter; you can also take it out yourself, but be warned, it’s much harder than the pros make it look.
