Property details

A modernised hotel with a spa in the centre of Amboise, perfect for chateau-hopping around the beautiful Loire Valley - includes breakfast, one-time sauna access and more
  • Hotel with history: On a quiet street five minutes from the cobbled centre of Amboise, La Maison Rabelais has a diverse past: first a boarding school, then an infirmary during the First World War, later a retirement home and now a hotel, the building has stood the test of time. Now comfortably modernised for today, it’s bright and wonderfully spacious.

  • Rest and relax: The hotel’s handful of bedrooms are set across four houses and include comfy rooms for two all the way up to self-catering studios – so however you wish to travel, there’s an option to suit. All rooms have colourful furnishings and slick en suite shower rooms, and many have views over the pool and gardens or the Royal Chateau and the Church of Saint-Denis.

  • Amenities at hand: As well as a seasonal heated swimming pool set within the beautifully manicured grounds, the hotel has a wellness area featuring a sauna and beauty and massage treatments, to keep you looking and feeling your best (fees apply). There’s also a bar with a varied menu of drinks, and an on-site grocery shop selling regional products.

How to get there

Tours Val de Loire airport is around 30 minutes away by car, while Paris and its airports are about three hours to the north. Amboise has a station - on the opposite bank of the river Loire to the hotel - so it’s a good option if you’re coming by public transport, though a car opens up the area and the hotel offers complimentary parking.

8 Rue Rabelais, 37400 Amboise, France

Elegant, genteel Amboise straddles both sides of the Loire River, a small market town with lofty beginnings, for it was once the home of the French royal court. It’s the perfect jumping off point for exploring the Loire Valley, one of France’s loveliest regions, where grand chateaux languish within magnificent gardens, vineyards offer effervescent crémants and flinty Chenin blancs, and richly fertile farms proffer a veritable cornucopia of fruits and vegetables.

For chateaux spotting, head to Indre-et-Loire, or stay closer to home and explore the jaw-dropping Royal Chateau of Amboise, which is built over the river with landscaped gardens as far as the eye can see. The day-to-day of the Pays de la Loire is distinctly rural, but head to one of the sophisticated larger towns - perhaps Orleans, Tours or Angers - to see a different side of this varied French region.
