Petit Paramé Le Colombier, 35400 Saint-Malo, France

Wide cobalt skies with scudding clouds, huge tides, thick ramparts and marinas clinking with the musical sound of rope on mast: Saint-Malo is a pretty port town on the coast of Brittany, with a fascinating history dating back to the 12th century. Walled fortifications have stood the test of time and the notoriously malevolent storms, and in the summer it’s a classic pilgrimage for holidaymakers making the short hop across the English Channel to explore broad beaches and curious granite islands.

Explore the cobbled streets of Saint-Malo’s old town to learn about the pirate invasions by the English of the 17th and 18th centuries – relations have much improved since then – or check the tide times before a trip out to the two islands which can be reached at low tide. Stroll along the wide sandy beaches for a bracing walk, or hop in the car to explore the Mont Saint-Michel along the coast – the world-famous abbey makes for some very atmospheric photographs.
