A beloved seaside resort town since the early 18th century, Margate’s long sandy beach and relaxed coastal vibe continue to draw visitors to this day. While the summer months are the busiest and most popular time to visit, the town’s quaint old-world charm and artsy atmosphere make it a great destination at any time of year, whether you’re one to build sand castles on the beach or drift between the pastel-hued shops of the Old Town.

The iconic Margate Dreamland has been serving up theme park thrills since 1870, but if it’s a different side to the town you’re after, you can soak up its fascinating history with a visit to Margate Caves or the Shell Grotto, whose intricate shell-lined tunnels are shrouded in mystery to this day. Elsewhere, get your art fix at the Turner Contemporary Gallery named after the famed landscape artist, get clued-up on crustaceans at the Crab Museum, or wander through the Old Kent Market for atmospheric eats and old-school sweets.
