You’ll be staying just outside Hersonissos, Crete’s party playground that’s best known for its restaurants, bars, clubs, waterparks, and trio of lovely beaches. For a cultural fix, Crete’s historic capital Heraklion is a 30-minute drive away and worth a visit for its fascinating Venetian fortress, superb Archaeological Museum, crowd-pleasing Palace of Knossos, and imposing Saint Minas Cathedral.

Elsewhere on the island, highlights include hiking the 10-mile-long Samaria Gorge, venturing to the slopes of Mount Ida to see the Ideon Cave where Zeus was supposedly born and raised.
